WNBA: DREAM DEFEAT LIBERTY FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON

Newark – June 15, 2011 – The defending eastern conference champion Atlanta Dream came into ” The Rock” looking for their first win of the season.  Mission Accomplished.  The Liberty’s problems on the offensive end continued in their second straight home game.

The Libs shot an anemic 36% from the field with only two starters scoring in double-digits and the bench contributing just 8 points.  On the bright side for the Liberty, Essence Carson had her second straight 20+ game, scoring a game high 21 points and matched a career high 8 rebounds.  Liberty center Kia Vaughn dropped in a career high 16 points and 2 blocks and rookie guard Sydney Colson made her WNBA debut.

The Liberty (2-2) travel to Chicago to take on the Sky (2-1) on Friday, June 17 @ 7:30pm.

FEVER DEFEAT LIBERTY WITH FOURTH QUARTER SURGE

Newark – June 11, 2011 – The NY Liberty were hoping for a repeat performance of  Friday night  in their home and home set with the Indiana Fever and treat their fans to a home-opening win.  Shooting lights out in the first three quarters, things looked good for NY.  The Liberty led by as much as 13 points in the third quarter, but the Fever went on a 10-4 run at the end of the third quarter to cut into New York’s lead and by the end of the quarter, Indiana was within 8.

In the fourth quarter the Liberty missed some very makable shots and the Fever took advantage of the Liberty’s drought from the field.  The Fever outscored the Liberty in the final quarter 24-10, and just like the night before, Indiana (2-1) came roaring back, only this time they held the lead on to the lead and defeated the Liberty (2-1) 86-80.

Tamika Catchings scored 18 points, Katie Douglas had 17 and rookie Jeanette Pohlen had 14 points, including a timely 3-pointer in the final minute.

For the Liberty, Essence Carson poured in a game high 23 points, Plenette Pierson had 16 points and Cappie Pondexter and Nicole Powell each added 13.
