For the first time in eight years, neither Williams sister will play in the second week at Wimbledon as top seed Serena was bundled out of the tournament on Saturday in a three-set shocker. What else happened (other than bad weather?) on day Six of The Championships? Here, a review of the biggest storylines.
Match of the Day: Alize Cornet d Serena Williams 1-6, 6-3, 6-4
It was the epic that no one saw coming – not even Alize Cornet. The 24-year-old Frenchwoman delivered a shocking upset of the five-time Wimbledon champion and the world No.1 on No.1 Court. Cornet was blasted off the court by the 32-year-old American in the first set before she settled in, taking leads of 5-1 and 5-2 in the last two sets, closing them out just when she needed to. It was a second consecutive win over Williams for the 24-year -old from France, who now faces Genie Bouchard in the fourth round. “I just cannot believe it: a few years ago, I couldn’t even play on grass, I was so bad,” Cornet said after the win. “And she’s ‘at home’, she plays so good here. Wow, it’s just a dream.”
