New York Citty – Serena Williams advanced to the fourth round with a hard-fought victory over fellow American, Varvara Lepchenko.

Williams, who seemed frustrated by her play and the conditions, held on to win what was an emotional victory. Now she is the lone American woman standing having dispatched three of her fellow mates (Taylor Townsend, Vania King and Lepchenko).
