Team USA hit the ground running in Rio, with Ginny Thrasher winning the first gold medal awarded at the Olympic Games.

Growing up Ginny Thrasher always wanted to compete at the Olympic Games in figure skating. When she started shooting she came to the realization that she would not make the Olympic Games in skating and never thought about that Olympic dream again.

“About the time I started shooting, toward the start of high school, I knew I wasn’t going to make it in ice skating. Other than that, I had never thought about the Olympics before.” She entered the 2016 US Olympic Trials in Fort Benning, GA, United States of America, with the goal of doing her best, not making the Olympic team.

“To me, it was just another match to try and do my best. I wasn’t really worried about the result.”
