Red Hot New York Liberty Clinches WNBA Playoffs Bye with 8th-Straight Win

NEW YORK, N.Y. – AUG. 27, 2017 – The New York Liberty (20-12) won its 8th game in a row, defeating the Chicago Sky (12-19) 92-62 on Sunday afternoon at The Garden. MVP candidate Tina Charles scored a game-high 22 points to lead four Liberty players in double figures. With her 1st basket of the night, Charles moved past fellow Queens/Christ the King legend Chamique Holdsclaw to take sole possession of 20th place in WNBA history in scoring. Charles now has 4,716 points and counting.

With the win, the Liberty clinched a 1st Round bye in the WNBA playoffs and will open with a single-elimination 2nd Round game on Sunday, Sept. 10, at The Garden. New York also secured its 3rd-straight 20-win season, the 1st time in franchise history the team has reached 20 wins 3 years in a row. The current 8-game winning streak is the 2nd-longest in franchise history, trailing just a run of 10 in a row back in 2010.

New York trailed 3-2 early in the 1st quarter but went on a 13-4 run to open up a big lead that it never relinquished. The Liberty led Chicago by 17 at the half and by as many as 32 points in the 4th quarter. Bria Hartley and Epiphanny Prince both scored 11 points, and Kiah Stokes recorded her 4th double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. New York saw 43 points come from its bench.

For the Sky, Stefanie Dolson reached the double-digit mark in scoring for the 20th time this season. Last year, she reached that mark 14 times and second-year guard Kahleah Copper set a season high in points with 17 points in today’s game, which also tied a career high for her. Her previous high was 13 this season, which she had reached twice before.

The 2017 regular season home finale is next Friday, Sept. 1, when the Liberty hosts the San Antonio Stars at 7:30 PM.

The Liberty will host its 2nd Round Playoff game at The Garden on Sept. 10th.
