The NBA launched the pilot program, Power Forward, in partnership with Exxon Mobil and Africare. Power Forward is a youth engagement initiative that will use basketball to develop health, leadership and life skills in Nigeria. NBA Legend and Nigeria naive Hakeem Olajuwon and WNBA Champion and Olympian Swin Cash are representing both the NBA and WNBA in tipping off the two-day launch!

The day started with the press conference and court dedication at the Governmental School Wuse Zone 3. A few dignitaries in attendance were: Amadou Fall (Managing Director of NBA Africa), Paul Arinze (General Manager of Exxon Mobil Nigeria), Dr. Darius Mans (President of Africare), Tijani Umar (President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation), and the Honorable Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Nigeria Ministry of Finance).

Following the ceremony, 100 youth participated in an hour-long basketball clinic. The day concluded with the Stakeholders’ Reception at the Yar’ Adua Center.

Tomorrow, Basketball Operations is leading full day clinic with nearly 300 youth at the Old Parade Ground Courts. Over 20 local basketball coaches, who participated in the coaching and training sessions over the past three days, will help facilitate the clinic. These individuals will continue to integrate the NBA basketball curriculum in 9 schools year-round. We are truly growing the game of basketball everywhere!
