SKY BLUE FC 1, CHICAGO RED STARS 0
PISCATAWAY, NJ—Tasha Kai’s 6th minute goal was all WPS defending champions Sky Blue FC needed to open their season with a 1-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars Sunday in front of 4,440 at Yurcak Field.

Kai got on the end of a pretty Sky Blue buildup and slid a right-footed shot under goalkeeper Jillian Loyden to give the hosts the lead. Heather O’Reilly made the final pass to earn the assist but Yael Averbuch, Carli Lloyd, and Laura Kalmari also participated in the attacking sequence.

The Red Stars did not look truly dangerous until the closing minutes. In thy 82nd minute, substitute Karen Carney found the ball at her feet and only goalkeeper Karen Bardsley to beat. Carney hesitated momentarily and Bardsley sprung off her line, clearing the ball as Carney went to the ground. The teams played on as Red Stars coach Emma Hayes screamed for a penalty call. Minutes later, Carney crossed the ball into the box for Cristiane, who missed high. The Brazilian’s final attempt of the game gave Bardsley some trouble, but she was able to fall on the ball before Kosovare Asilani could corral the rebound.

SAINT LOUIS ATHLETICA 2, FC GOLD PRIDE 0
FENTON, Mo.—Eniola Aluko scored both goals as Saint Louis Athletica blanked FC Gold Pride 2-0 Sunday at St. Louis Soccer Park.

Aluko opened the scoring in the 39th minute, off an assist from Shannon Boxx. In the 61st, the England international connected again, this time off Boxx’s corner kick.
