Defending Champion Stephens Advances

New York – Sloane Stephens defeated former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the fourth round.

The straight set win was not indicative of the hard fought battle between familiar foes.  “I just hung in there,” Stephens told the fans. “I was just battling as hard as I could.”

In a historic footnote to this year’s tournament, the match was the first to be played under the Arthur Ashe Stadium retractable roof as it was closed late in the final set, after a brief drizzle.

The slight interruption seemed to lift Stephens, who had just dropped serve to fall behind, 3-4.  When play resumed Stephens immediately broke Azarenka.
