Women’s Professional Soccer celebrated the culmination of its third season at the WPS Championship presented by Citi crowning the Western New York Flash as 2011 WPS Champions. The Flash defeated the Philadelphia Independence 1-1 (5-4) in a penalty kick shootout at home – Sahlen’s Stadium (Rochester, NY) – in front of the largest championship crowd in league history.
Ashlyn Harris, WPS goalkeeper of the year, made a diving save on the final penalty kick by Philly’s Laurel Del Rio to secure the Flash win. Marta, Christine Sinclair-Championship MVP, McCall Zerboni, Caroline Seger and Yael Averbuch scored in the shootout for the Flash (14-2-3), whose only two losses this season were to Philadelphia.
In an exciting finale to the 2011 season, the Wesern New York Flash earn the WPS Championship presented by Citi 1-1 (5-4) in penalty kicks.
