Flushing Meadows ~ It wasn’t pretty, but Serena Williams survives near scare from Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, in her 7-6, 6-3 second-round win. Williams, at 34, is playing her 16th US Open while Bertens, 24, was competing in her third.
Williams next opponent will be fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands who looked tough in her 6-2, 6-1 win over Coco Vandeweghe who had an epic meltdown in the first set when she was down 0-5.
