Queens, New York – World No. 1 Serena Williams easily advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal of the year with a business-like performance against Kaia Kanepi (EST). “I never thought it would be so exciting (smiling).” An elated Williams said post-match. “Yeah! It feels good. Obviously I don’t want this to end. But I’m just happy that I’m able to be performing a little better at the end of the year.”

The two-set victory showed shades of Williams we’ve all become accustomed to seeing in these Grand Slams.  Williams continues her quest to defend her US Open title and also reach the 18-Grand Slam milestone to tie Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

Of note, Williams last Grand Slam victory came on these same grounds last season when she defeated Victoria Azarenka.

Williams plays No.11 seed Flavia Pennetta, who was a straight set winner over Casey Dellacqua. Williams is 5-0 against Pennetta, most recently beating the Italian 6-2, 6-2 last month in Cincinnati.
