Serena Williams wins fifth US Open title

Serena Williams survived a tough three-set match to win her 5th US Open title.

Queens, NY – Top-seeded Serena Williams won her fifth U.S. Open championship and 17th Grand Slam title overall by beating No. 2 Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1.  In a windy final that presented problems for both players and especially for Williams, the world #1 battled back to defeat world #2 player in a memorable three-set final.

Early in the match Williams was caught on camera saying to her box ” I can’t play in this wind.”  So, for her to gather herself and go on to win her 5th US Open title was simply amazing. “I definitely felt the love today, so thank you all for the support – it’s an honor playing in New York, and I give all the love and glory to Jehovah,” Williams said. “Victoria’s such a great player and great person too, and it was an honor to play against you. And thank you to everyone in the box!”
