Amid energy and excitement, and in the presence of more than 50 of the world’s most celebrated female athletes, along with coaches and sports leaders, the 40th Annual Salute to Women in Sports at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City last night honored a groundbreaking year for female athletes and the girls they inspire.
Claressa Shields and Megan Rapinoe took home the 2019 Sportswoman of the Year Awards. Shields, the undisputed middleweight champion of the world, earned the individual sport award while Rapinoe, the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Golden Ball winner, was awarded the team sport honor.
Brazilian soccer legend Marta Vieira da Silva accepted the 2019 Wilma Rudolph Courage Award, presented with the Richard and Pamela Ader Foundation, for her heroics on the field and personal journey that has inspired the world. Trek Bicycle President John Burke became the first-ever Champion For Equality Award recipient for his work advancing gender equality in cycling, and Sheila C. Johnson, Salamander Hotels and Resorts Founder & CEO, accepted the 2019 Billie Jean King Leadership Award. The Champion for Equality Award was presented with TrailRunner International while the Billie Jean King Leadership Award was presented with the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative.
