Naomi Osaka captured her second straight grand slam title after defeating No.8 Petra Kvitova in a 3-set dual, in Melbourne. The reigning U.S Open champion will also be named the World No.1 for the first time, eclipsing Simona Halep who lost in the quarterfinals to Serena Williams.
Osaka is the first maiden major winner to double up since Jennifer Capriati in 2001 and the youngest atop the rankings since Caroline Wozniacki in 1990. Osaka, already Japan’s first major winner, is now the first Asian to rank No.1.
