COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A historic showing at the 2012 World Championships guided Skeleton athlete Katie Uhlaender (Breckenridge, Colo.) to Athlete of the Month honors. Uhlaender was crowned the 2012 women’s skeleton world champion on Feb. 24, continuing the U.S.’s dominant performance at the championships. The two-time Olympian and two-time world cup champion finally added the world championship gold medal to her sliding resume after finishing third in 2007 and second in 2008. Uhlaender earned the title this year by recording a combined time of 3:42.33.
Alpine skier Lindsay Vonn (Vail, Colo.) captured second place in the Female Athlete of the Month vote, while archery’s Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) finished third.
The U.S. Women’s National Water Polo Team finished second in the team vote. The women’s recurve archery team – comprised of Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.), Leek and Brandi DeLoach (Harlem, Ga.) – rounded out the competition in third.
Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. A voting panel selects the winners from the pool of nominees with online fan voting via Twitter accounting for 10 percent of the total vote.
