~The Czech becomes the 23rd player in history of the WTA to earn the No.1 ranking~
ST PETERSBURG, FL, USA – The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced today that Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova will become the new WTA World No.1 when the updated rankings are released on Monday, July 17.
The 25-year-old becomes the first player representing the Czech Republic to achieve this historic milestone since the computer rankings were introduced in 1975 and will be the 23rd woman overall to hold the No.1 ranking. Born in the Czech Republic, Martina Navratilova became WTA World No.1 on July 10, 1978, but at the time of her achievement, she was representing the USA. Pliskova’s rise to WTA World No.1 brings an end to the reign of Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who spent 34 non-consecutive weeks in the position, which is the 12th-most all-time.
This triumph is the latest peak in a surging career and comes off the back of her third WTA title of the season at the Aegon International Eastbourne. In the last 52 weeks – the period of time that contributes to rankings – Pliskova has won four WTA titles, reached the semifinals of two Grand Slams and two Premier Mandatories and defeated a Top 10 player on nine occasions. Since 2015, she has served more aces on tour than any other player.
“To be crowned the WTA No.1 player in the world is the ultimate accolade in our sport, and I would like to send my warmest congratulations to Karolina on this incredible achievement,” said WTA CEO and Chairman Steve Simon. “Karolina is an exemplary athlete on and off the court and she truly deserves this fantastic moment in her career.”
Pliskova will be presented with the WTA World No.1 Trophy, the focal point of which is a silver “star-map” tennis ball that represents the tennis universe. All world No.1s, past and present, are depicted by a diamond in the sky, which represents each champion’s mark on the sport.
The Czech also entered Wimbledon at No.1 on the Porsche Race to Singapore Leaderboard. The Top 8 singles and doubles teams will compete at the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global in October – an event at which she made her debut in 2016.
