Franklin named FINA’s 2011 Athletes of the Year
FINA named American swimmers Missy Franklin and Ryan Lochte as two of its nine 2011 Athletes of the Year. Athletes were chosen in each of the five aquatic disciplines – swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming – after collecting the votes from FINA’s 202 National Member Federations, and media and aquatic experts.
Franklin won gold medals in the 200m back, 4x200m free relay and 4x100m medley relay at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai. She also won a silver at Worlds in the 4x100m free relay and a bronze in the 50m back. In October, she set the short course world record in the 200m back.
Lochte was the world champion in five events this year, including the 200m free, 200m back, 200m IM, 400m IM and the 4x200m free relay. He also set a world record in the 200m IM at Worlds, the first long course world record since FINA banned the full-length, polyurethane bodysuits in 2010.
