Flushing Meadows, NY – For the second straight US Open, tennis legend Serena Williams faced an opponent making their maiden US Open main draw final. In 2018, Andreescu lost during the qualifying rounds, this year she makes it all the way to the final round and comes out triumphantly.
The 19-year-old Canadian, who was seeded #15 at the Open, came in with victories at Indian Wells and her home country’s Roger Cup on her resume. At the Rogers Cup, she won when Williams had to withdraw after 4 games.
Here at the Open, she defeated some worthy opponents including former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki and a very tricky Belinda Bencic, both in straight-sets.
This final against Williams, unlike their Rogers Cup encounter, went the distance with Andreescu besting the 23-time Grand Slam winner in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.
