Huntington Beach, CA – January 12 – The accolades continue to pour in for USA Women’s National Team goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FL/Princeton/NYAC). Johnson was recently named Swimming World’s Female Water Polo Player of the Year for 2016. This is the third consecutive year Johnson has won the award.
This award comes on the heels of winning gold with the U.S. Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team at the 2016 Olympic Games and being named the top goalkeeper. Johnson became the first ever water polo player to win Women’s Sports Foundation SportsWoman of the Year/Team Sport honors.
Johnson begins her senior season with the Princeton University Tigers this February 4-5.
FUN FACT: The U.S. Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team made history in Rio becoming the first ever team to win consecutive Olympic titles in women’s water polo. Johnson swatted away nine shots including a penalty shot stop.
