Flushing Meadows, NY ~ Serena Williams bid to claim her 7th US open title and break the Grand Slam tie she currently holds with Steffi Graf came to a screeching halt.  Williams was upset in the U.S. Open semifinals on Thursday night by Karolina Pliskova, who earned a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Pliskova is the same player who halted Angelique Kerber’s bid for No.1 two weeks ago, and defeated big sister Venus in a thriller a few days earlier at the Open.

Fatigue, Williams says, was not a factor, but she did endure a highly contested 3-set victory over a feisty Simona Halep less than 24 hours prior.  Whatever the reason, Williams reign at number one came to an end at her 186th week.
